{"id":2125,"date":"2016-03-09T21:17:16","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T21:17:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/?p=2125"},"modified":"2019-09-26T23:54:40","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T23:54:40","slug":"what-i-learned-from-writing-the-betcha-sweater-notes-to-self","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/what-i-learned-from-writing-the-betcha-sweater-notes-to-self\/","title":{"rendered":"What I learned from Writing the Bet&#8217;cha Sweater &#8211; notes to self"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-1-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image 1\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-1-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-1-768x906.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-1-868x1024.jpg 868w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-1.jpg 1602w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Pseudo code is not just for computer programmers &#8211; actually I don&#8217;t know if programmers\u00a0call it that anymore, but if I\u00a0write what I\u00a0need\u00a0to do to make\u00a0my\u00a0thing, turn that into comments, then turn my\u00a0comments into properly worded instructions, life gets smoother. \u00a0For instance; if I\u00a0have to let my project sit, it&#8217;s easier to get back into with comments. \u00a0This works for de-bugging too, &#8220;Oh, that&#8217;s what I meant to say!&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Beginners-Guide-Writing-Knitting-Patterns\/dp\/1632504340\/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_img_3?ie=UTF8&amp;refRID=0CN22T1DBC8E7ZFWZGRN\">&#8220;Pattern Writing for Knit Designers,&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/kateatherley.com\/\">Kate Atherley<\/a>\u00a0gave me permission to use this process &#8211; why I needed permission I don&#8217;t know!<\/li>\n<li>I\u00a0can also turn pseudo code into the\u00a0big picture, terse, traditional instructions with all repeats and stitch count numbers, then write the\u00a0longer, specific, new style instructions with marker notation, row numbers, and stitch counts. \u00a0(giving both sorts of instructions is OK, more permission from Kate Atherley.)<\/li>\n<li>It felt like I had to be able to write both sorts of instructions from the get go, but of course, increments are fine. \u00a0Why wouldn&#8217;t increments be fine?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-4-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Image 4\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-4-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-4-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-4-1024x647.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Keep using the spreadsheet for graded numbers (of course) but make sure that the concatenation formula \u00a0is\u00a0actually formatted properly! I\u00a0had a lot of (space)(commas) to fix, and they all stemmed from the SAME formatting goof! \u00a0In editing, it was easier to go through and fix them than to fix the spreadsheet, I make my pdfs in LaTexa, not a WYSIWYG program, so I can&#8217;t link my text to my spreadsheet for automatic updates.<\/li>\n<li>While I&#8217;m on the spreadsheet, make some size labels formatted in the proper form &#8211; so often I have to write those, &#8220;Size -(32, 36, -, -, -) continue on with &#8230;..&#8221;\u00a0 and they are a bear to type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-7-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image 7\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-7-269x300.jpg 269w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-7-768x855.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-7-919x1024.jpg 919w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Image-7.jpg 1865w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I really like the way marker notation instructions flow, but I can&#8217;t seem to write them without\u00a0a huge chart to stare at to see how patterns flow. \u00a0And this part gets iterative too: sometimes as I&#8217;m writing the instructions, I see how shifting stitches a few repeats or parts of repeats would simplify shaping instructions, and that makes me have to change the chart and re-write\u00a0past\u00a0sections. \u00a0Maybe on the next project, I can imagine my way through all the steps and strategize the easiest configuration from the get go?
