{"id":2232,"date":"2016-07-23T13:23:17","date_gmt":"2016-07-23T13:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/?p=2232"},"modified":"2023-04-22T17:51:43","modified_gmt":"2023-04-22T17:51:43","slug":"motif-challenge-1-owl-in-twist-stitches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/motif-challenge-1-owl-in-twist-stitches\/","title":{"rendered":"Motif Challenge 1, Owl in Twist Stitches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m continuing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/choosing-a-motif-source\/\">a blog challenge<\/a> to myself to demonstrate the process of developing realistic motifs in several different techniques.&nbsp; Let&#8217;s make some exuberant beauty!<\/p>\n<p>My process of making a knitted motif.&nbsp; First, the drawing <a href=\"file:\/\/\/media\/christine\/Dover%20Bird%20Illustrations\/bibliographical_info.html\">(with copyright in the comfy place<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Glancing through my copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bird-Illustrations-CD-ROM-Dover-Electronic\/dp\/0486996697\">Bird Illustrations CD-ROM and book,<\/a> I decided that I wanted to work with the Northern Saw Whet Owl, originally from Birds of Prey Coloring Book, John Green, copyright \u00a9 1989 by John Green.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2233 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129.jpg\" alt=\"129\" width=\"203\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>Second scout out trouble spots: the perch is horizontal, the edge of the upper feathers in the wings is horizontal too.&nbsp; But the feathered circles around the eyes dip and curve helpfully.<\/p>\n<p>The first technique I&#8217;m trying in this series is: sculptural knitting from the Kathleen Warnick article One-color Picture Knitting article in Threads Magazine April\/May1990.<\/p>\n<p>I plan to use the heavy outline as the twist stitches, then fill in the lighter textures with knit\/purl stitches.&nbsp; The eyes will probably be baubles, or flat baubles.&nbsp; I&#8217;ll try a bunch or things for the beak and claws.&nbsp; For the perch, I&#8217;m thinking a section of stockinette worked proud of the background, then re-connected to the body as a tube &#8211; Oh wait, that&#8217;s a bit high relief for a twist stitch chart, how about a 1\/1 rib rectangle on a reverse stockinette ground, I&#8217;ll save the stockinette tube for the ring cable version.&nbsp; Uh-oh, the claw sits on top of it, tricky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129-195x300.png\" alt=\"129\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129-195x300.png 195w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/129.png 254w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next step is to make an overlay of a grid, then use that as a base for a knitting grid.&nbsp; I find that a square grid is a good start, because the twist stitches draw in the horizontal part of the knitting &#8211; knitter&#8217;s graph paper is important for color work though, where the natural brick shapes of stockinette really show.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2239 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/twistowl-219x300.png\" alt=\"twistowl\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/twistowl-219x300.png 219w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/twistowl-768x1054.png 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/twistowl-746x1024.png 746w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/twistowl.png 1781w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once I have a knitting chart, I can knit it.<\/p>\n<p>Dun Dun Dun.
