{"id":2646,"date":"2017-01-13T10:32:29","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T10:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/?p=2646"},"modified":"2023-05-08T12:31:18","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T12:31:18","slug":"double-increases-a-comparison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/double-increases-a-comparison\/","title":{"rendered":"Double Increases &#8211; a comparison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2667 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smallerS6300289.jpg\" alt=\"Six swatches each showing a different double increase on stockinette, reverse stockinette, rib, and garter ground\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smallerS6300289.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/smallerS6300289-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This year&nbsp;when I was developing the octagon medallion for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twistcollective.com\/collection\/component\/content\/article\/158-shop\/winter-2016-patterns\/2397-illicium-by-christine-guest\">Illicium,&nbsp;<\/a>I used a few different double increases in the center of the star for different effects, some of which surprised me. &nbsp;I thought a systematic approach to looking for their attributes might be a good idea, (and I needed a blog topic, the owl being stalled) so I came up with a square medallion that would show off the different aspects of double increases on different grounds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2688 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/double-increase-sample.png\" alt=\"the stitch chart for the demonstration swatches of the different increases\" width=\"2755\" height=\"788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/double-increase-sample.png 2755w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/double-increase-sample-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/double-increase-sample-768x220.png 768w, https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/double-increase-sample-1024x293.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2755px) 100vw, 2755px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t always use the&nbsp;cdd or purl into fbf, but I used those symbols &nbsp;to mean knit-ish center and purl-ish center.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: grey;\"> grey swatch <\/span>uses the first two increases of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/tree-increase-tutorial\/\">Tree Increase,<\/a> and it is the smallest, tightest of the six, perhaps because the increases get slipped every other row instead of worked? &nbsp;I didn&#8217;t use a purl-ish increase on this swatch.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: saddlebrown;\">Brown Swatch<\/span> uses a lifted increase into the center stitch, knit the center stitch, lifted increase into the center stitch. &nbsp;I purled the lifted increases as needed. &nbsp;I was surprised that this one was not solid, but a small hole formed in the stitch under the increase. &nbsp;Also how the garter swatch looked as if there were a knit up the center &#8211; the opposite side looks plain. &nbsp;I want to explore this a little more someday.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: olive;\">Green\/Gold\/Medicinal Honey swatch<\/span> uses k, over, k, or p, over, p. &nbsp;As expected, the center of the increase is a bit open.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: darkorange;\">Orange Swatch<\/span> uses k, p, k&nbsp;in one stitch, or p, k, p in one stitch. It was gently open too.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: yellow;\">Yellow swatch<\/span> used k, kb, pick up the stitch again and knit it, or p, pb, pick up the stitch again and purl it. &nbsp;That one was fairly solid looking.<\/p>\n<p>The white swatch used kb, k, pick up the bar increase and knit it twisted, or pb, p, pick up the bar increase and purl it twisted.
