demonstrate various strategies to fit a dropped Shoulder Boat Neck sweater, whether one based on Granny Squares or not, but I didn&#8217;t want to spend my sample making time on them (because this <em>is<\/em> an &#8220;O, Shiny!&#8221; blog series)<\/p><p>So<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christineguestdesigns.com\/blog\/i-just-ordered-a-granny-square-afghan-off-e-bay\/\"> I bought an afghan off of e-bay,<\/a> then took it apart.\u00a0 I seamed it with slipped stitches, in slippery mercerized cotton so that it would be easy to re-configure to demonstrate various options.<\/p><p>My tools were a large swatch that I could slip under seam openings to determine the size of the filler parts, some chain stitched lengths in the apricot yarn for the same purpose and my phone camera.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4c2245 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"f4c2245\" ball of your shoulder, there may be as much as a palm&#8217;s difference in the height.\u00a0 In the back, it is smaller (and more awkward to try!)\u00a0 By twisting a lot, I get two fingers height difference.<\/p><p>Most people&#8217;s shoulders slope, and their necks are set towards the front of the body. In crochet, adding an angle in a few stair stepped rows is fairly easy,\u00a0 but how many steps and how high should they be?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ce1ca0 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1ce1ca0\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cffb144 elementor-widget class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Using the chain and swatch rulers<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41c667f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"41c667f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var( --e-global-color-primary ); font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span>I measured how much higher the neck should got on this sweater with the chain stitch rulers.\u00a0 \u00a0The chains tell how many rows to add in this way: a double crochet is two chains tall, so for 8 chains high in the back, I needed 4 rows of double crochet in the back.\u00a0 If I were using single crochet I would need 8 rows, and if I were using treble fingers fit flat before my back starts.\u00a0 I am a fluffy person though.<\/p><p>Many traditional clothes were made of simple shapes, but they added a diamond or football shaped piece into the seam between the body and the sleeve called a gusset, which could give a lot of motion to the garment without needing a lot\u00a0 more material or pre-planning.\u00a0<\/p><p>Like the shoulder shaping, I saw how to make my gussets by opening the sleeve seams near the underarm, and sliding my large swatch inside. I photographed the way the hole fell naturally when my daughter raised her arm, then filled the space with a crocheted piece with the name number of stitches and rows as the photographed fill
