When you want to make cables curl up into rings or curves, you combine them with increases and decreases. Barbara G Walker’s Charted Knitting Designs uses one method, Elsebeth Lavold’s Viking knits uses another.
I ‘unvented’ an increase method (the Christmas Tree Increase) that I believe more closely mimics the multiple slipped decrease BGW uses. I usually knit in the round so I can avoid making it from the back of the work, but I have a tutorial for that. You can also use the increase to start a bauble, or half bauble. And since I adore matching, you can end a cable on a half bauble too.
My Ivy Vine Mittens and Holly Mittens use these techniques.
