What is a Herring Run?

A Herring Run is the rivers and streams that herring swim upstream each spring to lay their eggs in ponds (like Salmon).  Unlike Salmon, Herring live after spawning! Then they turn around and swim back out to sea. They sound as persistent as knitters.  Dan and I took photos at the Oliver Mill Park in Middleborough, MA, as well as at the cement fish ladder in town, and that is it’s own story.

What is it like to knit this sweater?

My friend Lindsay (KnitEcoChic) described the sweater construction as a shawl that you add sleeves to, with a fun stitch pattern.  The neckline is adjusted so that the front is lowered, so there will be no forthcoming accusations of Adam’s Apple strangling here!

The pattern is full of charts, written instructions, diagrams, and fitting notes.   Just turning the angle 45 degrees makes the construction a little exciting at a few spots, so there will be a KAL on Slack, with  the invitation in the pattern.

The Square root of 2 comes into play in fitting choices.  Mrs Izzy, I’m so glad that we covered right isosceles triangles in Trig class, I could hear your voice saying 1,1, square root of 2 in my head.

Size Range

The pattern is written in six sizes from a 38.75”, 98.5 cm chest to a 65.75, 167 cm chest.  It’s always tricky addressing potential knitters; I don’t want to assume that you are all female! I hope that you (the knitter) will find a good size for yourself, or  for your Dad, or for your son, or for your sweetheart.

My husband has been wearing his Herring Run Sweater ever since we got good enough photos that I didn’t need to worry about spills, pills or snags; and after 4 years it is still looking good!
