On my wedding anniversary in 2016 my husband surprised me with a completed trip plan to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival. When we explored the book signing area, Nicky Epstein complimented Dan on his sweater, Dan pointed to me.
“It’s 17 years old.”
Mr Epstein paused in hauling books, “She says I’m on her waiting list, I haven’t gotten a sweater in 17 years either.”
I said, “It’s all those photography samples she has to make,”
Mr Epstein said, “That’s what she says.”
Nicky Epstein said, “That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.”
If you have loved her books and patterns over the years, she was as lovely in person, so was Mr Epstein.
Why hadn’t I made Dan a sweater in 17 years?
- He’s taller than me and a lot wider in the shoulder (lots and lots of knitting.)
- He wears his plainest sweaters the most often (lots and lots of boring knitting).
- His lab is overheated, so he likes fine sweaters (lots and lots of boring knitting with thin yarn.)
- Oh, that’s why.
I decided to turn my list into a design challenge:
- He can’t help being taller than me
- dk yarn is fine enough
- A plain -ish fabric can be fun if it requires an unusual construction – bias herringbone, like on his favorite scarf!
